Pet Allergy and Dermatology Care in Gibsonia, PA
Like people, animals can have allergic reactions to foods and indoor and outdoor allergens. The big difference is that they cannot tell us how they feel, so we have to pay careful attention to our pet’s skin and ears.
Pet Allergy and Dermatology Care
If your pet experiences any of the following symptoms, it’s time to bring them in for a dermatology visit:
- Chronic itching or scratching
- Hair loss
- Ear infections
- Skin or ear odor
- Inflamed or red skin
- Sores, welts, or rashes
Three main types of allergies affect animals:
- Food allergies typically cause itching year-round, and pets may rub their faces or ears on household surfaces, scoot their rear ends, or lick their feet excessively.
- Environmental allergies are caused by mold, pollen, and dust mites. Pets with allergic dermatitis from environmental allergies will be itchy, have reoccurring ear or skin infections, and may show cold-like symptoms, including sneezing, coughing, and a runny nose.
- Fleabite allergies may make an already itchy problem more painful. Pets that are allergic to fleabites can have swelling, hair loss, excessive scratching, skin infections, and even become anemic.
